The recently signed UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is poised to bring a transformative shift in India’s healthcare landscape, particularly in the field of cancer treatment. One of the key outcomes of the agreement is the reduction in import tariffs on advanced medical equipment, which is expected to significantly benefit hospitals and patients alike.

Dr. Raj Nagarkar, Chief of Surgical Oncology & Robotic Services and Managing Director at HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC), welcomed the development, citing its long-term impact on making cutting-edge cancer treatments more accessible and affordable.

“The lowered import costs on high-end medical technologies — including robotic surgical systems and precision oncology equipment — have the potential to directly benefit both providers and patients,” said Dr. Nagarkar. “At HCG Manavata, we are committed to delivering advanced cancer care, and reduced capital costs will enable us to expand access to sophisticated procedures such as robotic-assisted surgeries.”

He added that over time, the cost difference between robotic-assisted surgeries and conventional cancer surgeries is expected to reduce, opening doors for wider adoption in tier-II and tier-III cities, where affordability has often been a barrier.

Dr. Nagarkar emphasized that this development is not only a technological leap but also a move toward equity in healthcare. With greater access to advanced tools, hospitals can offer minimally invasive surgeries, shorter recovery times, and better outcomes, aligning India’s cancer care practices with global standards.

“This is a game-changing opportunity to improve the quality of cancer care and ensure that no patient is left behind due to cost or geography,” he concluded.
