igus Unveils World’s First Bicycle Made from Recycled Ocean Plastics

German manufacturing company igus has unveiled the igus:bike, a bicycle made from 90% recycled plastic waste, including discarded fishing nets and shampoo bottles. This sustainable innovation was introduced to mark igus India’s 25th anniversary and igus Germany’s 60th anniversary.

The igus:bike is corrosion-free, weather-resistant, and requires no lubrication, making it a low-maintenance and eco-friendly alternative to traditional bicycles. Unlike conventional bikes that rely on metal parts and lubricants, igus’ high-performance polymers eliminate wear and tear while reducing environmental pollution.

Currently on a global tour across 16 countries, the igus:bike showcases how plastic waste can be repurposed for sustainable urban mobility. Speaking on the innovation, Dr. Thilo Schultes, CEO, dry-tech new business, igus, said, “igus:bike is a testament to our commitment to advancing a circular economy for plastics. We aim to transform waste into valuable resources.”

igus continues to research ways to increase the percentage of recycled materials in its products. Mr. Deepak Paul, Managing Director, igus India, added, “We want to inspire consumers and industries to see plastic as a resource, not waste.”
