AiMeD Welcomes Uttar Pradesh’s Push to Strengthen Medical Device Clinical Research Framework

The Association of Indian Medical Device Industry has welcomed the Uttar Pradesh government’s initiative to strengthen the clinical research ecosystem through the UP Shruti (MRAS) workshop and the launch of the Uttar Pradesh Integrated Medical Research Application System (UP-MRAS).

The workshop, held at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, brought together stakeholders from government, academia, industry and contract research organisations, aiming to create a more integrated and transparent framework for healthcare research.

Commenting on the development, Rajiv Nath said the launch of UP-MRAS marks a significant step towards building a unified digital ecosystem for clinical research in India’s medical device sector.

“A unified, digital and transparent clinical research ecosystem is critical for expediting clinical validation, regulatory approvals and faster commercialisation of indigenously developed medical devices,” he said.

Nath added that the industry has faced challenges due to fragmented clinical research processes and delays in approvals, as regulatory pathways for devices often followed drug trial procedures. He noted that standardised operating procedures tailored for medical devices under initiatives like UP-MRAS would help improve compliance, build trust and create a predictable pathway for innovators.

The UP-MRAS platform is designed to streamline research workflows, enable digital submission of proposals and improve coordination among stakeholders. It is expected to reduce timelines for clinical studies and approvals, supporting the growth of the domestic medical devices sector.

AiMeD also highlighted the importance of collaboration between government institutions, academia and industry in strengthening the research ecosystem, along with improvements in regulatory alignment and data management.

The association acknowledged contributions from members of the technical committee, including G. N. Singh, Ashish Indani, Hardeep Mehta, Priyadarshini Arambam and Shariq Syed.

AiMeD said such state-level initiatives could serve as a model for other regions and support the government’s broader push to strengthen domestic manufacturing and innovation in the healthcare sector.
