In a notable medical achievement, NIIMS Hospital in Greater Noida successfully performed a complex surgery to remove a massive 3.8 kg ovarian cyst from a 19-year-old patient named Priyanka. The cyst measured approximately 28x20x10 cm and had initially raised serious concerns due to its size and uncertain origin.
The patient had reported severe abdominal discomfort and visible swelling. Preliminary scans had misidentified the mass as possibly originating from the bowel’s mesentery, sparking fears of malignancy. However, thorough medical evaluation ruled out cancer.
The case was taken up for exploratory laparotomy under the leadership of Dr. Harsh Bhati, Consultant General Surgeon, along with a skilled team comprising Dr. Shehwar Koul, Dr. Partha Nandi, and Dr. Vivek. The surgery, which lasted about 1.5 hours, was conducted with anesthesia support from Dr. Ayushmann and Dr. Surekha.
During the procedure, surgeons discovered that the mass was a left-sided para-ovarian cyst, extending from the liver to the uterus. “It was a diagnostic dilemma from the start,” said Dr. Bhati. “The cyst’s origin and extension made the dissection complex, especially since preserving the patient’s ovary was critical at her young age.”
Despite the challenges, the surgical team successfully removed the cyst without complications. Post-surgery, the patient is reported to be recovering well and is under close observation.
This case underscores NIIMS Hospital’s commitment to advanced surgical care and multidisciplinary excellence in handling rare and complicated medical conditions.
