NAREDCO Mahi Says Women’s Role in Real Estate Is Expanding Beyond Home Ownership

The allotment of one crore houses to women under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) and PMAY-U 2.0 marks a significant milestone in women’s participation in housing and asset ownership, NAREDCO Mahi said.

According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, more than 1.25 crore houses have been sanctioned under PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0, of which one crore have been allotted in the name of women, either as female-headed households or through joint ownership. In the eighth Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee meeting held on August 6, more than 2.09 lakh houses were sanctioned, including around 2.03 lakh allotted to women.

NAREDCO Mahi said women’s participation in the real estate sector is increasingly extending beyond home ownership to property purchase decisions, investment, entrepreneurship, professional roles and leadership positions.

Dr Ananta Singh Raghuvanshi, Chairperson, NAREDCO Mahi, said home ownership in a woman’s name or through joint ownership can provide a financial asset and strengthen her participation in household decisions.

Smita Patil, President, NAREDCO Mahi, said women are increasingly contributing to the real estate sector as homeowners, investors, professionals, entrepreneurs and leaders.

The organisation said greater participation of women across the real estate value chain could support a more inclusive and diverse sector as India’s real estate industry continues to expand.

The government data also shows that PMAY-U 2.0 is aimed at addressing the housing needs of eligible urban families through various components, including beneficiary-led construction, affordable housing partnerships, interest subsidies and rental housing.
