Cloudflare launches Basin data platform for developers

Cloudflare Inc has launched Basin, a data platform aimed at helping developers and enterprises collect, store and analyse data at scale without managing dedicated servers or paying data-transfer fees between clouds.

Built on Apache Iceberg and Cloudflare R2, Basin provides a serverless platform to ingest, store, catalogue and query analytical data using compatible tools, the company said in a statement.

The platform stores data in Apache Iceberg, an open industry-standard format, allowing users to analyse it with compatible tools without being tied to a single vendor.

Basin runs on Cloudflare’s global network and enables developers to ingest, store and query data without provisioning or managing dedicated infrastructure, the company said.

“Developers shouldn’t need to become data infrastructure operators just to answer questions from their own data,” said Dane Knecht, CTO at Cloudflare.

The company said Basin also eliminates data-transfer fees when users query data using tools across different clouds, platforms or regions.

Cloudflare said Basin is generally available from October 2. The company said developers can use the platform to build applications powered by their own data while reducing infrastructure management requirements.
