NIIMS holds vitiligo awareness programme, stresses early diagnosis and treatment

The Department of Dermatology at Noida International Institute of Medical Sciences (NIIMS) organised a vitiligo awareness programme to educate people about the autoimmune skin condition, dispel myths and encourage early diagnosis and treatment.

The event was held with the support of the institute’s leadership and under the guidance of the Department of Dermatology. It was attended by faculty members, resident doctors, interns, medical students and heads of departments.

During the programme, dermatology experts explained that vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing skin pigment. They clarified that the condition is not contagious and should not be linked to social stigma or misconceptions.

The experts said early medical consultation after the appearance of white patches can help slow disease progression, reduce the development of new lesions and improve the chances of successful repigmentation. They also highlighted the psychological impact of vitiligo, including anxiety, low self-esteem and social isolation, and stressed the need for timely treatment and support.

As part of the programme, Dr. Anuja Rao, Associate Professor at the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), Greater Noida, delivered a lecture on recent advances in the diagnosis and management of vitiligo. Dr. Azra, a postgraduate resident in the Department of Dermatology at NIIMS, also presented the latest developments and treatment options for the condition.

The programme concluded with an interactive discussion, allowing participants to learn about current approaches to vitiligo care and patient management. The organisers said the initiative was aimed at promoting awareness, reducing stigma and encouraging timely medical intervention for better health outcomes.
