India Dismisses Canadian Allegations of Election Interference, Accuses Ottawa of Meddling

– India has firmly rejected a report by the Canadian Commission alleging that the Indian government interfered in Canada’s elections. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) criticized Canada for “consistently interfering in India’s internal affairs,” asserting that such actions have fostered conditions conducive to illegal migration and organized crime.

The MEA’s statement emphasized, “We have seen a report about alleged activities on purported interference. It is, in fact, Canada which has been consistently interfering in India’s internal affairs. This has also created an environment for illegal migration and organized criminal activities.”

The Canadian report had claimed that both China and India attempted to meddle in its electoral processes, identifying India as the second most active country in such endeavors. The report suggested that India, similar to China, engages in foreign interference through diplomatic channels and proxies, including clandestine financial support to Canadian politicians to promote pro-India candidates or influence officeholders. However, it noted that there is no definitive evidence indicating that the politicians involved were aware of these interference attempts or that the efforts were successful.

India’s response underscores the ongoing diplomatic tensions between the two nations, with New Delhi urging Ottawa to address its concerns and cease actions that enable illegal migration and related criminal activities.
