D Y Patil University School of Law (DYPSOL), Navi Mumbai, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Institute of Medicine & Law (IML) to strengthen medico-legal education, research, and patient-centred healthcare governance.
The MoU was signed by Prof. (Dr.) Karuna Akshay Malviya, Director, DYPSOL, and Mr. Ravindra Mangal, Executive Director, IML. The partnership will focus on joint research initiatives, policy advocacy, executive education, and specialised medico-legal programmes.
The collaboration aims to address emerging challenges related to medical negligence litigation, patient rights, ethical medical practices, and regulatory compliance. It also seeks to promote informed consent, transparency, and accountability in healthcare delivery, while enhancing patient advocacy and public trust.
The 18th Annual MedLegal Review 2026 will be the first programme jointly organised under the partnership. The review has played a key role in educating doctors, hospitals, and medico-legal professionals on evolving legal standards and best practices. In addition, an executive training programme targeted at hospital leadership and senior decision-makers is scheduled to be launched in April 2026, with a focus on strengthening medico-legal governance and compliance.
Commenting on the collaboration, Prof. (Dr.) Karuna Akshay Malviya said the partnership would help build interdisciplinary capacity to address complex medical negligence and patient safety issues. Dr. Chirag Balyan highlighted the importance of research-driven engagement in patient advocacy and healthcare accountability. Mr. Ravindra Mangal noted that improved legal awareness among medical professionals could help reduce disputes, while Mr. Agasti Mhatre emphasised the need for continuous medico-legal dialogue to support ethical practice and litigation avoidance.
DYPSOL operates under D Y Patil Deemed to be University, led by Chancellor Dr. Vijay D. Patil and Pro-Chancellor Dr. Shivani Patil. IML is a leading provider of education, information, and services related to medical laws for doctors, hospitals, and legal professionals.
