SRA Unveils Technology-Driven Reforms to Accelerate Slum Rehabilitation Across Mumbai

The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) has introduced a series of technology-driven reforms aimed at expediting slum redevelopment projects and ensuring transparency in the process. With over half of Mumbai’s population living in slums or unstructured housing, these initiatives are expected to significantly boost rehabilitation efforts and improve living conditions.

During a meeting with representatives from CREDAI-MCHI, NAREDCO, BDA, and PEATA, SRA CEO Dr. Mahendra Kalyankar showcased the Authority’s digital transformation, which includes a multilingual STQC-certified website, integrated online modules, blockchain-based approval storage, and chatbot-enabled citizen interfaces. These initiatives aim to speed up approvals, enhance accountability, and reassure slum families that their rehabilitation remains central to the Authority’s mission.

Dr. Kalyankar set an ambitious goal to map every slum structure in Mumbai by the end of this year. With tools like auto-DCR, proactive legal amendments, and time-bound eviction programs, the SRA is working toward a “slum-free Mumbai.”

Industry leaders welcomed the reforms. Shri Sukhraj Nahar, President of CREDAI-MCHI, said the digital shift has transformed perceptions about slum rehabilitation’s viability. NAREDCO’s Vice Chairman, Shri Rajan Bandelkar, praised SRA’s transparent approach, calling it a “new benchmark in governance.” Shri Abhay Chandak, Vice President of NAREDCO Maharashtra, lauded the Authority’s 45-day demolition SOPs, while BDA President Shri Vikram Mehta commended the use of satellite data to track and prevent new encroachments.

With developers expressing renewed confidence, the SRA’s tech-driven 2.0 version is set to redefine Mumbai’s urban transformation journey.
