In a remarkable medical achievement, an 11-year-old girl in Bengaluru has successfully recovered from Achalasia Cardia, a rare and debilitating oesophageal disorder, after undergoing advanced treatment at Narayana Health City.
Achalasia Cardia is a condition that affects the lower oesophagus, making it difficult for food to pass into the stomach due to the inability of the muscles to relax. The young patient exhibited severe symptoms, including recurring vomiting, significant weight loss of 5 kg, and difficulty swallowing.
Doctors at Narayana Health City, led by Dr. Kiran R, Consultant in Medical Gastroenterology, diagnosed the condition and treated her using a minimally invasive procedure called Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM). This advanced technique involves cutting specific muscles in the oesophagus to restore normal swallowing function.
The procedure was successful, and the patient has since shown significant improvement. She has regained her ability to eat, gained weight, and no longer experiences regurgitation.
Dr. Kiran emphasized the importance of early intervention, stating, “Timely diagnosis and advanced treatment options like POEM can significantly improve outcomes for patients with Achalasia Cardia.”
The patient is currently recovering well and is under medical supervision for follow-up care.
