Western Sydney University has announced new initiatives in India, including scholarships and a proposed centre focused on water security, as it prepares to open its Greater Noida campus in 2027.
The announcement was made during a visit by New South Wales Premier Chris Minns, who was accompanied by NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey and Western Sydney University Vice-Chancellor and President Distinguished Professor George Williams AO.
The university said the upcoming campus will host the JalSetu Centre of Excellence in Water Security, Digital Innovation and Community Resilience. The centre will focus on issues such as groundwater sustainability, river health, sustainable irrigation and urban water management across Uttar Pradesh.
The university also plans to introduce a Master’s programme in Sustainable Water Management in 2027, subject to approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC). The programme will build on the university’s work through the Australia India Water Centre, a network of 33 organisations across Australia and India.
Western Sydney University said the Greater Noida campus will also offer programmes in business, data, applied finance and fintech, with a focus on emerging industries and the Global Capability Centre ecosystem.
The university has announced scholarships covering areas including women’s advancement, water sustainability, business, data and innovation.
The event also featured the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and ceremonial tree planting, marking the expanding cooperation between NSW and India in education, research, innovation and sustainability.
Western Sydney University said it has more than two decades of engagement with India and currently has over 1,300 international Indian students.
