The University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, has become the highest-ranked global university to receive approval to open a campus in India. The University Grants Commission (UGC) formally issued UNSW a Letter of Intent at a ceremony in New Delhi, attended by India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Australia’s Minister for Education Jason Clare.
The new campus, UNSW Bengaluru, will open in August 2026, allowing Indian students to earn a degree from a global top-20 university without travelling abroad. The campus will offer undergraduate programs in business, media, computer science, data science, and a postgraduate program in cybersecurity, mirroring the curriculum and quality standards of the Australia campus. Academic oversight will be carried out through joint governance and UNSW’s Academic Board.
Australian Education Minister Jason Clare said the move strengthens bilateral ties and expands opportunities for Indian students, describing UNSW’s entry as “a major milestone that brings Australian education closer to young people in India.”
Indian Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan welcomed UNSW’s presence, stating that it supports India’s ambition to become a global hub for education, innovation, and knowledge creation.
UNSW Vice Chancellor and President, Professor Attila Brungs, said the campus aligns with the University’s 2035 Strategy focused on global impact and student success. He emphasised that the Bengaluru campus will give Indian students access to world-class education at home and further deepen UNSW’s long-standing partnerships with Indian institutions.
Located in India’s technology capital, the campus aims to accelerate high-skilled talent development and cutting-edge research aligned with India’s growing knowledge economy.
