NIIMS Medical College’s Department of Ophthalmology has conducted a hands-on wet lab on phacoemulsification in collaboration with Alcon to strengthen cataract surgery skills among postgraduate students, senior residents and faculty members.
The workshop, themed “Skill Enhancement in Modern Cataract Surgery,” saw participation from around 25–30 postgraduate students, senior residents and faculty members. Participants received expert-led demonstrations and practical training in phacoemulsification, a widely used modern cataract surgery technique.
According to the institute, the programme aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical surgical training by providing supervised hands-on experience to improve precision and confidence in performing cataract procedures.
Director Dr. S. N. Gupta said such training programmes are important for developing skilled surgeons and improving patient care through practical exposure.
Medical Superintendent Dr. Ranjeet Gulliani said continuous skill development contributes to better clinical outcomes and strengthens healthcare delivery within the hospital.
Dean Dr. Manisha Jindal said collaborative academic initiatives help students and residents stay updated with advances in ophthalmology and evolving surgical technologies.
Head of the Department of Ophthalmology Dr. J. S. Bhalla said the objective was to provide structured hands-on learning opportunities that prepare residents for real-world ophthalmic practice.
The workshop included guided wet lab sessions where participants practised phacoemulsification techniques under expert supervision to improve surgical confidence, hand-eye coordination and procedural precision.
Associate Professor Dr. Rahul Singh said the initiative marked a step towards strengthening ophthalmic surgical training at NIIMS and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to organising specialised academic programmes that support medical education and patient care.
The institute said the programme is expected to contribute to improving ophthalmology training, cataract treatment expertise and eye care services in the region.
