In a groundbreaking achievement in robotic-assisted cancer care, HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC) in Nashik has become the world’s first hospital to perform Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS) using the CMR Versius robotic system. The procedure was successfully carried out on an 89-year-old patient suffering from a lesion at the base of his tongue, which had caused significant swallowing difficulties for several months.
The patient, a resident of Nashik, was apprehensive about traditional surgery due to his advanced age, but the robotic surgery provided a less invasive alternative. Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Raj Nagarkar, the surgery was completed in just six minutes, with a total procedure time of less than 30 minutes. Remarkably, the patient experienced zero post-operative complications and resumed oral intake the following day, being discharged in a stable, disease-free condition.
TORS, a minimally invasive technique, uses robotic assistance to remove tumors through the mouth, offering greater precision and minimal tissue damage compared to traditional surgery. The CMR Versius robotic platform, known for its flexibility and enhanced precision, marked a significant milestone in this global first.
“This procedure highlights the future of surgical oncology, offering a safer, more effective solution for elderly patients, with remarkable recovery times,” said Prof. Dr. Raj Nagarkar, Chief of Surgical Oncology and Robotic Services at KIMS Manavata Hospitals.
