HCG Manavata Cancer Centre removes 1-kg kidney tumour from 2-year-old child in Nashik

A two-year-old child diagnosed with Wilms Tumour, a type of kidney cancer commonly seen in young children, has successfully undergone surgery at HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC) in Nashik, where doctors removed a tumour weighing nearly one kilogram, hospital officials said.

The child, Atharwa, who weighs around 11 kilograms, was brought to the hospital after his parents noticed abdominal swelling and later observed blood in his urine. Subsequent medical investigations, including a PET-CT scan, revealed a large tumour in his left kidney.

Doctors said the cancer was confined to the kidney and had not spread to other parts of the body, improving the prospects for successful treatment.

Prof. Dr. Raj Nagarkar, Chief of Surgical Oncology and Robotic Services and Managing Director of KIMS Manavata Hospitals, HCG Manavata Cancer Centre and Six Sigma, said a multidisciplinary team decided to proceed with surgery following detailed evaluation and consultations with the family.

“The operation lasted around one-and-a-half hours, during which the tumour was successfully removed using advanced surgical techniques aimed at minimising blood loss and ensuring patient safety,” Nagarkar said.

According to the hospital, specialised postoperative pain management measures were also employed to support recovery. The child was discharged three days after the procedure and has since resumed normal activities.

Wilms Tumour is a rare childhood cancer that primarily affects children below the age of five. Medical experts say advances in paediatric oncology and surgery have significantly improved outcomes, particularly when the disease is diagnosed early.

Nagarkar said counselling was provided to the family regarding life with a single kidney, adding that individuals can lead healthy and active lives with one functioning kidney.

The child remains under regular follow-up care and is reported to be recovering well, hospital officials said.
