Filmmaker Yogesh Deshpande enters mainstream Hindi cinema with upcoming directorial debut

Filmmaker Yogesh Deshpande is set to enter mainstream Hindi cinema with his upcoming feature film, marking a new phase in his career spanning advertising and regional cinema. The project is currently in pre-production and is expected to go on floors in the coming months. Casting is underway and location recce has been completed, according to the makers.

Deshpande began his career in advertising in 2005 and has written and directed over 100 ad films. He founded RedefineZ Concepts, which later expanded into RedefineZ Productions, a Pune-based production house.

Speaking about his transition, Deshpande said his move into Hindi cinema was a “natural extension” of his creative journey. He said the film will focus on emotionally grounded storytelling while reflecting contemporary themes shaped by technology and changing human relationships.

He previously directed the Marathi feature 66 Sadashiv, marking his entry into long-form storytelling. He later helmed the musical biopic Swaragandharvaa Sudhir Phadke, based on the life of legendary composer-singer Sudhir Phadke. The film featured original songs recorded by noted artists including Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosale, and Kishore Kumar, and was released in multiple countries.

The upcoming Hindi film is set in the Konkan region and explores the human impact of the digital divide. The story is centred on a female protagonist and aims to combine intimate human experiences with expansive natural landscapes.

Industry observers say Deshpande’s transition reflects a growing trend of regional filmmakers moving into mainstream Hindi cinema while retaining culturally rooted narratives.
