Attorney General Launches Book Celebrating 75 Years of Lawyers’ Contributions to India’s Democracy

Marking 75 years of the Republic of India, the Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF) celebrated the invaluable contributions of lawyers to the nation’s democratic journey with the launch of Lawyers of India in Freedom Struggle & in Independent India (1872-2022): 150 Years and Continued Glorious Contribution Toward the Centennial – 2047.

The event, hosted at “Shantha,” Neeti Bagh, brought together notable figures from India’s legal fraternity. Former Attorney General of India, Mr. K.K. Venugopal, unveiled the book and presented the first copy to the current Attorney General of India, Mr. R. Venkataramani.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Venugopal underlined the indispensable role of lawyers in shaping India’s democratic foundation. “Over 75 years of the Republic, lawyers have been at the forefront, not just in courtrooms but in nation-building, ensuring justice and equality for all,” he stated.

Dr. Lalit Bhasin, President of SILF, elaborated on the book’s importance. “This book is a tribute to the lawyers who not only fought for India’s independence but also laid the groundwork for the legal system that sustains our democracy today,” he said.

The book spans 150 years, spotlighting the contributions of iconic legal figures like Mahatma Gandhi, Lala Lajpat Rai, and Chittaranjan Das during the freedom struggle, as well as modern-day legal practitioners who have championed democratic ideals over 75 years of independence.

As India approaches its centennial in 2047, the book stands as a testament to the enduring influence of the legal community in safeguarding democratic values and ensuring justice for future generations.
