Cloudflare to onboard Astro framework team, commits to keeping project open source

Cloudflare, a leading connectivity cloud company, has announced that the team behind Astro, a popular open-source JavaScript web framework, will be joining Cloudflare, in a move aimed at strengthening the future development of high-performance, content-driven websites.

Astro, developed by The Astro Technology Company, is widely used by major global brands including Unilever, Visa and NBC News, as well as hundreds of thousands of developers worldwide. Cloudflare said the Astro framework will remain open source, ensuring continued community-led innovation and long-term growth under Cloudflare’s stewardship.

Astro is designed to address growing demand for faster-loading websites, as search engines increasingly prioritise speed and consumers expect near-instant page load times. Unlike traditional JavaScript-heavy frameworks, Astro loads only the essential code required to render a page, helping improve performance, search rankings and user engagement.

“Protecting and investing in open source tools is critical to the health of a free and open Internet,” Cloudflare co-founder and chief executive officer Matthew Prince said. He added that the move would ensure Astro continues to be a leading framework for content-driven websites in the years ahead.

Fred Schott, chief executive officer of The Astro Technology Company, said joining Cloudflare would enable faster development and broader adoption of Astro, while maintaining flexibility for developers to deploy projects on Cloudflare or other platforms.

Astro currently supports platforms such as Webflow and Wix, both of which operate on Cloudflare’s infrastructure. Earlier this week, Astro announced the beta release of Astro 6, which introduces support for additional JavaScript runtimes, improved performance and faster build times.

Cloudflare said it will continue to support the open-source Astro ecosystem through the Astro Ecosystem Fund, in collaboration with industry partners including Webflow, Netlify, Wix and Sentry.
